Lost Where I Belong

Another Flying Lotus freebie now (they keep on coming), this time singer Andreya Triana gets a FlyLo (re)workout. A soul singer getting remixed by Flying Lotus was always gonna end up with a nice remix, check it out and download it below:

Big up Flying Lotus for being big in the freebie game :-)

Free The Robots

Massive track for free download at 320 from Alpha Pup's latest star Free The Robots. Big boy bass on this one, similar style to that of LA compatriot Shlohmo and Planet Mu's Slugabed. Kind of a cross between dubstep, hip-hop and some outer space electronica. His debut LP entitled 'Ctrl Alt Delete' drops on Alpha Pup on 30th March so keep ya eyes peeled for that cos it's set to be large. Grab the track below to get a taster:

More free Flying Lotus

Another free Flying Lotus tune for download now, this time his tune Quakes from the Warp 2010 compilation. This didn't make it onto the album so it's been put for download on the Warp website, in a zip file along with 2 other free Lotus tunes ('Ancestors', which I posted yesterday, and his Gucci Mane remix). Grab the file below.

Download the free Flying Lotus tunes HERE

Ikonika x The Brown Acid

Another free tune for you to enjoy! I posted it a few days ago and turns out it was given away via Fader the next day! Ikonika on the funky vibe.

Jose James x Flying Lotus

Super smooth track from Jose James up now, this one too produced by Flying Lotus. FlyLo continues to astound me at the quality and variation of his production. Easily the most talented producer around at the moment. Jose James voice over a Flying Lotus beat was always gonna be a winner so grab it below:

Martyn for XLR8R

Fresh mix from Martyn now, this time for XLR8R Magazine. If you haven't already got his Fabric 50 compilation then do so NOW! This mix is different to that, featuring tunes from the likes of Prince and J Dilla (RIP), as well as Joy Orbison, Drexciya and King Midas Sound. Makes for nice listening so enjoy.

Breakage x Florence & The Machine

Another free tune (they keep on coming at the moment) and another remix from Breakage. He's getting a lot of remix work at the moment, with his album release no the horizon as well! This time Florence & The Machine get the Breakage treatment. This one is on a similar tip to his Massive Attack reworking, featuring a catchy female vocal, with a signature Breakage beat and some techno-esque, housey rolling bass. Anyway grab it below and enjoy!

Wedge & Shadz 'Running Away' Video

isp001: Running away from elvis ellis on Vimeo.
Video time now. This is the video that goes with Wedge & Shadz' tune 'Running Away', which was released on If Symptons Persist with the massive Guido remix on the flip a few months ago. The video was shot on a remote location in South Wales on 16mm.

Gonjasufi 'Ancestors'

I slept on this for a while. I kept seeing the name cropping up everywhere, but didn't check out what/who it was. Only recently have I found out that he is in fact some sort of "desert-dwelling yogi", and he happens to have an LP dropping on Warp on March 8th, entitled 'A Sufi & A Killer'. This tune is produced by none other than Flying Lotus, and features his signature beats, with Gonja's crackly, eery vocals over the top. Grab it below and enjoy!

Big up Warp records for keeping it weird!

Sbtrkt for Young Turks and Brainmath

Sbtrkt has got a fair few releases lined up over the next couple of months. On March 12th Young Turks will release the Sbtrkt tunes 'Rundown' and 'Soundboy Shift'. This will be a super exclusive release, limited to only 500 copies. Later in March, his remix of Jose James' 'Warrior' (a cover of Benga's 'Emotions') will be released on a 12" on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings, along with remixes from Rockwell and Jas Wan. Finally, he's got a 2 x 12" double pack EP coming out on Brainmath, the super limited edition vinyl label, who in the past have released Zomby and Falty DL material, and so far this year some James Blake bits too! The tracks on that are '2020', 'Jamlock', 'Oneweekover' and 'Pauseforthought'. Big ting for Sbtrkt in twenty-ten!!

Tasters

Breakage seems to be on lil remix flex at the minute with his Massive Attack remix and then this one! It's on the same housey techno tip as the Massive Attack remix and with Florence's vocals the two go hand in hand! I think its about time for the next 'In For The Kill' and by the way he's going I think that Breakage might be able to attain such commercial success especially with the track he's made with Donaeo 'Speechless' which is forthcoming on his album in March. It seems that he just can't stop making anthems!

The Brown Acid - Bastard Kids (Ikonika Remix)

This time is Ikonika on remix duty following in the footsteps of label mate Zomby and Starkey who have both remixed the band. Ikonika has turned the track into a funky number with heavy sub bass and her signature bleeps. This will definately go off in a club and increases the anticipation of her album 'Contact, Love, Want, Have, CD,' forthcoming on Hyperdub April 6th. Watch out for her remix of Manchester's Illum Sphere becasue despite not having heard it I know it will be sick!

BONUS:
The Brown Acid - Try Humanity (Starkey Remix)

The Brown Acid - Try Humanity (Zomby's Vitamin E Remix)

Illum Sphere - Agent White

STARKEY - EAR DRUMS AND BLACK HOLES

Soooo it seems like there's album fever at the moment because everyone seems to be releasing one in the next few months! Starkey's second album shall be with us April 19th on Planet Mu and this one I cannot wait for! Finally 'Capsule' will be released! I haven'theard it since I last saw him play but im pretty sure that it's BIGGG! 'Stars' which feature the ever soulful Anneka is release March 8th featuring a remix from Raffertie as well. I personally prefer the original but hey! She also features on the track 'Hear Space' on Vex'd's next album 'Cloud Seed' coming out on Planet Mu March 22nd which be BIGGG! There's just too many albums coming out I can't wait!

Starkey ft. Anneka "Stars" (12", digital single) Preview by starkbot

He's also hooked up with Grime hot boy P Money to make a what I can only describe as an unexpected track. I would have hoped for a dancefloor banger instead he's switched it up and given us an airy synthy number that is full of summer vibes. BBQ music :-) Just listening it to this tracks gets me excited for the summer time because the fact that it's still snowing is a joke!

Say hello to the 8Bitch!

After hearing about 8Bitch through the mighty FACT, after she featured in their 10 to watch in 2010 special, I got in touch with her so we could do a little interview and get a nice (longer) mix off her for you to enjoy as well. She's another producer pushing the instrumental 8 bit hip-hop sound currently dominating the musical conversations of hipsters up and down the country. She rolls with Rustie and the LuckyMe crew up in Glasgow and it's clearly had an effect on her style, her tunes are a lot more subtle than those of Rustie and Hud Mo, but still feature lots of the same elements of those producers. She sent me over a few tunes a few weeks ago, and I've had them on repeat for a minute now. Just from the tunes she sent to me, I can tell you she's got nice variation, she's not confined to one particular style and all of her tunes showcase different aspects of her musical mind. Some feature huge percussion, some mad 8 bit samples, all are BIG! So check out our interview with 8-bitch below and grab the mix as well, tis a nice one:

Sooo, for anyone who doesn't know you, what name do you write under? How would you describe the sounds and tunes you make?

I'm Maya, I write under 8Bitch and I make all sorts from electronic stuff from techno to hip hop, usually laced with bass, percussions, weird noise, 8 bit samples, chopped up squelchy stuff etc

You live in Glasgow now, pretty different from where you were born in Slovenia. What attracted you to the city? Was it for the music scene there?

I lived in west London for 7 years before I moved to Glasgow. Slovenia's lovely but in a tiny country like that the inspiration and resources for music run out pretty quickly...It's much better now but back then it was impossible to buy vinyl or have easy access to more obscure music. I've moved to Glasgow last year to escape ridiculous London rent prices-I could never have a studio in London but I can in Glasgow. My boyfriend's Glaswegian as well, so that was probably the biggest incentive for me to move. People here are amazing!

Just readin a review of some of your tunes, it says you're a model/TV actress/journalist......Kind of like a mini mogul then eh?

Hell no-moguls have money! I've always been busy and yeah I do loads of different things but I totally agree with 'Jack of all trades, master of none' philosophy, so I'm now fully concentrating in music. Or I'm going to, hopefully.

I heard the movements, scrathes etccccc of the girl characters in DJ Hero were modelled on you....How did that come about? Pretty sick I must say!

Simple-I got f*cking lucky...My agent said they were looking for an actress who can DJ as well as rollerblade and dance so I ended up doing the motion capture for DJ Hero which I'm really proud to be a part of. Ironically, I'm actually pretty bad at the game itself...and I play on easy haha.

You roll with Rustie and the LuckyMe crew up in Glasgow, has he been a big influence on your sound?

Well it was music that brought us together and we have extremely similar tastes but I think it's pretty obvious that currently his sound is very different to mine...I'm his biggest fan and I learn from him constantly but I hope to be musically perceived as an individual, not 'his girlfriend'.

Are there any people we should be looking out for this year?

Loads from Scotland massive...Loops Haunt, Dam Mantle, Samoyed and LuckyMe's American Men are my favourites at the moment but also Becoming Real, Illum Sphere, Krystal Klear...god there's way to many...

What releases have you got forthcoming this year? What have you got planned in general this year?

Quite a few...Svetlana Industries scooped some of my favourite tunes but there's stuff planned for Slit Jockey, Fortified and 3 more labels that I can't yet talk about. There'll be freebies on compilations too and exciting remixes. This year I hope to start working on my live set and I'd like to work with other people-either as a collab, remixer or vocalist. I'm a bit sick of being a studio hermit.

She kindly put together an exclusive mix for us so grab it below and enjoy. Let me tell you, it was no easy task getting this laid down so big ups to 8Bitch for finding the time! No tracklist on this one so spotters do ya best, you know how it is! ;-) I can tell you the first track is Kuedo (Jamie Vex'd) 'Starfox'. TUUUUUNE!

The Bug ft. FlowDan - Run (Forthcoming Swamp 81)

This one is forthcoming on Loefah's Swamp 81 imprint March 1st and boy o boy is it a biggie! When Loefah dropped it at Exodus /DMZ it got 4 reloads! This needs a sick soundsystem and the Iration Steppas did it justice. It's already on Flow Dan's Album 'Original Dan', which I think slipped under the radar, but now it's getting a vinyl release. Turn up ya speakers!

Jamie Anderson

I got played this song over the weekend and loved it straight away. Having just done a tiny bit of research (myspace) it turns out that the man behind this song is from Bristol! I'm glad I found out about him now because having listened to more of his stuff he is quality.

He's been releasing music since 1997 on his own label called 'Artform' so he's been in the game for a while. Last year he had a release on Sven Vath's Cocoon label with Deepgrove, this being his biggest release to date. His 'Vacations EP' was released at the beginning of the month and features the song 'Vietjam' which I was played. Check it below. Expect to see more techno and house posts in the future!

On April 3rd Sven Vath and Loco Dice take over Matter which is set to be a sick night! I saw Sven Vath at Exit a couple of years ago and it was sick! I then tried to catch him at The End only to arrive to late and only manage to see him leave the club! The tickets are £20 which is pretty steep but definately worth it!

Free Tunes

Everybody loves freebies so here are a couple tunes that have been given away for free lately. If you don't already you should sign up to the RCRD LBL mailing list and you'll recieve their record of the day for free everyday.

Magic Wands - Warrior (The xx Remix)

Daedelus - Order Of The Golden Dawn

Massive Attack - Girl I Love You (feat. Horace Andy) (She Is Danger Remix)

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

The time has come again for lastest piece of musical genius from virtual band Gorillaz and the forthcoming album is titled 'Plastic Beach'. The LP is due for release on March 8th in Europe and as Albarn said he wanted to do he has rounded up an eclectic mix of artists to feature on the album.

The album features artists such as Snoop Dogg, the UK's own Kano and Bashy, De La Soul as well as living legend and soul singer Bobby Womack - who at first rejected Albarn's request to collaborate until his daughter persuaded him to do it.

"Sweepstakes", the first song Mos Def recorded with Gorillaz, was done in one take. Mos Def described the song as "one of the greatest things as an MC that I've ever done" in an interview with 1xtra's Semtex. He also said that he will be made into a cartoon character named 'Sun Moon Stars' for his collaboration with Gorillaz and that his character is a game vendor at Plastic Beach.

Damon Albarn said he's, "making this one the most pop record I've ever made in many ways," this said, with the Gorillaz you never really know what to expect! All I know is that I am extremely excited to get my hands on this and if it lives up to my expectations then it should be one of the best albums of 2010!

The xx Dubstep Project

Reading on the FACT magazine website about Jamie xx, the producer of the 3 man band, launching a dubstep project, which is gonna be unveiled at Modeselektor's Melt!-Selektor stage at the Melt! Festival. Really interested to hear this cos The xx are causing big waves at the moment, and Jamie xx's production is tight so this bodes well! More info to come.

Free H.E.N.C.H. Tune

Ahead of the release of the H.E.N.C.H. mixtape, label head honcho Jakes has given away his remix of his collaboration with Joker '3K Lane'. This isn't the VIP that has been knocking about for a while, it's a different remix which is much bouncier. The mixtape is mixed by Jakes and features tunes from friend of the blog and label new boy Mensah, as well as Komonazmuk, Tek-One, Chasing Shadows and more. There are gonna be vinyl samplers of the tunes as well, although I'm unsure at the moment whether the full 320 versions of the tunes are gonna be released unmixed, or whether they're only gonna be released in mixed format, similar to the Rinse compilations. Anyway grab the tune below and enjoy!

Urban Art Forms Festival

Some information about the Urban Art Forms Festival dropped into my inbox yesterday. This festival, which takes place in Austria between the 3rd and 6th June 2010, looks really interesting and is definitely worth considering as an end of year getaway!

So far on the line up they've confirmed Sven Vath, Luciano, Stephan Bodzin, as well as Andy C, DJ Fresh, Alix Perez, dBridge, Instra:mental and more! There is still loads more to be announced as well so keep your eyes peeled as this festival is serious! But this festival is a bit different as it's not just about the music, they're bringing some of the sickest VJs in the world to Austria as well so there's something for everyone.

Kuedo - Starfox EP (Forthcoming Planet Mu)

Ok so on Norman Records the EP is entitled 'Starfox' and on Redeye 'Dream Sequence' however the same on both sights is the tracklist. Regardless, Planet Mu welcomes back the Jamie Vex'd under new moniker - Kuedo for a release due feb 22nd.

Tracklist : Starfox / Shutter Light Girl / Joy Construction / Glow

I first heard 'Starfox' when Starkey played at Thelka (best club in Bristol in my opinion) and I cheekily had a look at his laptop but there was no artist by the track...This track is amazing!

For me, the track easily likeable becasue even those who do not like the glitchy, bleepy, broken up sound can enjoy because the bleeps and other noises do not distract the listener, they come together to make the track better which I find a lot oif gltchy tracks fail to do. There are number of reasons why I like this track. For one Starfox is a sick game so dig out the SNES, two Starfox is the sickest character on Super Smash Bros and last but not least least simply for the way the song makes me feel when I hear it! For some reason it put me in the mood for driving around a city at night (like how the lead characters do in some films where they need to clear their head) even though I can't drive....AND one reason - the melodies.

I haven't had the chance to listen to the rest of the EP however, if you do want read up on the other tracks then you can read a review here and listen the whole 'Starfox' track.

http://www.littlewhiteearbuds.com/kuedo-starfox-ep/

Check out the video as well -it's not the official one but it goes hand in hand with the song.

Review: Breakage Foundation LP

Breakage is one of the most in demand and respected producers in the scene at the minute. Fact. His latest LP entitled Foundation, coming on Shy FX's Digital Soundboy imprint, has been one of the most highly anticipated long players of the past year if not more, ever since it was declared "forthcoming" nearly 12 months ago. The album dropped into my inbox this morning and so it appears the time has actually come. Let me tell you know, all the hype around this producer and this album is deserved, in fact it doesn't do it justice.

On Foundation, Breakage is continuously switching up styles, showing he has range and variation beyond that of any other other producer around. On tracks such as Justified and Higher, he takes us 20,000 leagues down to the depths, with his trademark almost white niose-esque bass. Then on title track Foundation and Old Skool Ting, which featured on Commix's FabricLive 44 complilation early last year, he shows his roots in jungle with some proper hands in the air Amen breaks. There is no one sound to this album, Breakage's sound is what Breakage wants it to be. His sound is so unique and yet undefineable. It's Breakage.

Stand out tracks? Justified featuring Erin on the vocals has been one of my favourite tracks ever since I first heard it at the latter end of last year. The deep vocals crackly and echoing, as if it was recorded in the shower, along with that Breakage bass make this track easily the standout for me. On a big system, this tune is serious!

Open Up is another favourite of mine, it's got a sick marching rhythm to it with a Reggae vocal sample. And then there's Speechless, another big track from the LP. This one has got a proper rock vibe to it, with Donae'o on the vocals this time. I could go on and on....

One track that is sure to cause a lot of hype is his collaboration with elusive producer Burial on a track called Vial. Dark garage vibe to this track, aspects of both their production style coming to the foreground and the result is sick! As well as these, tracks such as Hard ft. Newham Generals, Run 'Em Out ft. Roots Manuva and Higher all feature on the album. As well as Over ft. Zarif, which has got a really nice 2 step garage feel to it, and Temper ft. Kemo. For those of you on a non-140 drum & bass ting, Foundation is a proper Amen track, hands in the air business indeed, and Old Skool Ting are the ones for you.

Foundation is definitely gonna be an early contender for album of the year, Breakage shows why he is so respected and proves his weight in gold. It's a musical journey through styles all put together perfectly in a 17 track long player. What's next for him? Who knows, but everyone will be watching!

Release date: 22nd March
Label: Digital Soundboy

Autechre x FACT

FACT continue to be bang on point with their mixes, with number 122 being provided by Warp legends Autechre. They've been on Warp for nearly 20 years now and have released countless albums on the seminal label, with their latest entitled 'Oversteps' dropping in March. Grab the mix below and enjoy!

"No tracklist either, so spotters, please do you worst. What we can tell you is that the mix is an unpredictable, kaleidoscopic affair, rooted in sinuous leftfield hip-hop but with bursts of tremulous ambient electronics, techno, hectic breakbeats and, at one particularly memorable point, metal. We needn’t tell you how rare recorded DJ-mixes from Autechre are, so please, don’t sleep on this."

Sabre 'A Wandering Journal' LP Sampler

The sampler for Sabre's highly anticipated debut LP, entitled 'A Wandering Journal', dropped into my inbox this afternoon. The two tracks that feature on the 12" set the tone perfectly for the album, and increases the anticipation even further before the Critical long player drops on 29th March 2010.

First up is the massive track Marvel, which in typical Sabre style is deep and moody, as well as featuring some big boy bass to boot. Marvel is backed with dancefloor smasher Barefoot, a collaboration with Subtitles-signed Ulterior Motive. This track is serious! The bassline on this one is not to be taken lightly. Fans of Break and Spectrasoul, you'll love this one!

LP Sampler Release Date: 15th February
LP Release Date: 29th March

Great Expectations: Dawntreader

Meet Dawntreader. He's another Nottingham boy pushing the hybrid sounds of garage, dubstep and funky, along with friends Geiom, Littlefoot and Brackles. After becoming bored of the dubstep scene, they're forging a new sound and a new style.

He started off mixing hip-hop, before making the switch to drum & bass, then eventually finding a home in the dubstep scene, at a time when it was getting more and more popular, and he was a regular at Nottingham nights Wigflex and Futureproof, getting more and more immersed in the local scene. He draws a lot of inspiration from another local artist Geiom, who he was a 12" coming out with on Double Science Records.

Another free tune...

...this time from none other than Hyperdub new boys Darkstar. Their tune Aidy's Girl's A Computer featured on the Hyperdub '5' compilation and was in our list of tunes of the year....and rightfully so! This tune is called Automating and like their previous tunes features lots of chopped up vocals, rearranged and used as instruments with the mix. Personally, I'm feeling this tune and even though it's rough, me likey! Grab it below and see what you think.
